All about the trip
Budapest is a city split in two by the Danube river. ‘Buda’ being the quieter, hillier half and ‘Pest’ the livelier, more-commercial heart of the city.
While most tourists don’t venture much into the inner-Buda neighbourhoods, there are plenty of good reasons to do so. In this part of town, the eateries, bakeries, coffeehouses and restaurants are aimed more at the locals; however, with the right guide, you too can enjoy the local cuisine found here.
As you taste your way through the neighbourhood, your English-speaking guide will also fill you in on the fascinating sights, architecture and history of this eclectic part of town. From the Ottoman occupation to the Battle of Budapest (which devastated the neighbourhood during World War Two), a lot of history has happened here.
You’ll visit a local neighborhood market (one of the best in the city), where farmers and artisans from all over the countryside sell fresh produce, homemade jams, juices, spices and other delicacies. There are butchers which specialize in indigenous Hungarian animals (like mangalica and grey cattle) and also many cheese mongers selling local specialities such as, Óvári, Ilmici, Lajta, Göcsej and Balaton.
The tour’s lunch consists of authentic home-style Hungarian dishes served at a tiny restaurant where the cooking is as grandmotherly as the décor.
We’ll also taste several desserts at a gem of a pastry shop, run by the same family for generations, where the pastries taste as amazing as they look.
After dessert, we’ll enjoy coffee at a Socialist-style coffee shop which has barely changed over the past several decades.
The Buda side is noted for having the best thermal bath houses, including several who sell big mugs of curative water for drinking. If you are so inclined, you can taste a glass … and head back another day to experience the waters (which are conveniently, said to help digestion).
Because this tour covers a wide area, we’ll use the tram; just like the locals do.Watch on Youtube
