All about the trip
Join us for this moderately-easy 9.5 km hike from Kymi to ‘Agios Georgios’, otherwise known as St. George’s Castle, which is located between Kymi and Skyros. This is the perfect hike for both nature enthusiasts and history lovers.
Starting at the main square in Kymi, we gradually hike towards the outskirts of the town. Modern dwellings gradually morph into more-rustic farmhouses as we head out into the Greek countryside. The surrounding region here overlooks the Aegean Sea and because of this picturesque vantage point, Kymi is sometimes called "The Balcony of the Aegean."
The Byzantine castle of St. George (Agios Georgios) itself was built between Kymi and Skyros. No one is exactly sure when the castle was actually constructed, but in the 13th century, it had been renovated by the local lord, Likario, who was a Latin Knight and well-known adventurer.
Inside the castle, there is the small church of Saint George (Agios Georgios) which gave its namesake to the castle. The ravages of time haven’t been too kind to the castle and only some parts of the outer wall still remain today. There is plenty to see however and the views out across the Aegean sea are well-worth the hike.
On our way back to Kymi we will take a slight detour in order to see the convent monastery of ‘Moni Metamorfosi’ where it’s possible to view the inner court.
