All about the trip
Chernobyl is a unique site located in the Kiev area of Ukraine. Situated 130 kilometers north of the capital Kiev, its name is synonymous with one of the worst disasters in history. On April 26, 1986, a massive explosion at the nuclear plant in nearby Pripyat destroyed the complex’s fourth reactor. This incident is remembered as the largest nuclear disaster ever. Vast quantities of radioactive materials were released into the environment following the disaster people who lived in the area were forced to leave their homes and to resettle elsewhere. In total more than 100 thousand people were relocated from within a 30-kilometer radius of the explosion. Now this is an abandoned area where only the presence of decaying buildings shows that human life once flourished here.
In the course of the tour, you will visit the city of Chernobyl, the abandoned city of Pripyat, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, and the legendary fourth reactor, which is now contained under a new safe sarcophagus. In addition, you will visit “Chernobyl-2”, a famous, formerly off-limits Soviet military town. The main feature at this site is a towering radar installation known as “Duga”-“Arc”. This 150 meter-high, 800 meter-long antenna was used as an early warning device to detect intercontinental missile launches from US territory.
