All about the trip
Ascending from Avignon airport and heading towards Carpentras in the comfort of a state-of-the-art helicopter, we will fly for 30-minutes over Mont Ventoux, The Sainte-Croix chapel, the Dentelles de Montmirail and a whole plethora of other gems located in the beautiful region of Provence.
Arriving first over the city of Carpentras, with its winding streets and rustic limestone architecture, this is a great opportunity to take some memorable aerial photos of a quintessentially beautiful French town.
Located some 20 km northeast of Carpentras, next you will see the world-famous, Mont Ventoux. Standing at 1,909 m (6,263 ft) above sea-level, it is the highest mountain in the region, often nicknamed the "Giant of Provence". Famous for its barren appearance and inclusion in the Tour De France, its name also means ‘windy’ (venteux translates to ‘windy’ in French). Wind speeds at the summit have been recorded to be as high as 320 km/h (200 mph). But rest assured, we monitor barometric weather information daily and will always be cautious when deciding to fly or not.
Mont Ventoux, although geologically part of the Alps, is often considered to be separate from them, due to the lack of mountains of a similar height nearby. It stands alone to the north of the Luberon range, separated by the Monts de Vaucluse, and the Dentelles de Montmirail.
The mountain's barren limestone peak appears from a distance to be snow-capped all year round. Its isolated position overlooking the valley of the Rhône ensures that it dominates the entire region and can be seen from many miles away on a clear day.
As we make our way over to the Dentelles de Montmirail, you will now discover another reason to fall in love with the beautiful French countryside as we hover over the dramatically jagged peaks. Formed by the horizontal strata of Jurassic limestone being folded and forced into a nearly upright position, the result is some very unique rock formations that simply look incredible from the air. These jagged rock formations eventually transition into beautiful rolling vineyards and rustic French farmhouses for as far as the eye can see. This region of France truly needs to be seen to be believed.
With so much to see in all directions, please do remember to charge your camera batteries and bring an extra memory card with you. We know from first-hand experience that you will want to take more photos than you originally intended of such incredible views.
Also, don’t forget to bring some sunglasses too, as it can get quite bright when flying on summer days.
Please remember to arrive 30 mins earlier than the flight time as there will be a briefing on helicopter safety from your pilot.
