All about the trip
Located in the south part of the Cordillera Blanca, it is one of the few glaciers left in the tropical areas of South America; the glacier is around 8 square km in size, and around 4 km long. The glacier is quickly melting, so far it has lost 22% of its size and 15.5% of its ice mass in the last 30 years. The glacier occupies an Andean peak and has steep, cliff like edges, characteristic of a chirque glacier.
The day will begin in the morning at the hotel with a departure around 8 am. We will visit the Recuay province and continue to Pachacoto. From here we will turn east side by an unpaved road and admire the beautiful landscape of the highlands full of icy wind and sheepherders.
After 15km from the highway, we will stop next to a small lake called "Patococha" for birdwatching! Hopefully, we'll be able to see wild ducks, Andean goose, caracara birds and much more. After this, we'll stop at the gasified water steam. Here we can drink the natural water which flows underground. Next, we'll stop at a lake that changes colors throughout the day, due to the sun radiation and minerals.
After this, we'll continue to the petroglyph pains, then after a 10 km, we will arrive at Pastoruru parking place. From here, we'll walk to the ice mountain which is about 1km away. You can easily hike or enjoy a horseback ride to reach the mountain Pastoruri. You can explore the area by visiting the iced lake and ice cave. After a few hours, we'll head back and drive directly to Huaraz arriving around 6 pm.
