All about the trip
We begin our hike from the village of Messoroungi and trek southwards through the dense forest of Helmos towards the waterfalls in the Hydata of Stygos, otherwise known as ‘The Styx’ (in Greece it is not uncommon for locations to have a few different names).
‘Aroania’, also known as ‘Helmos’ or ‘Chelmos’, is a mountain range in Achaea, Peloponnese, Greece. Below its rugged peaks, at over 2,100 meters above sea level, several springs of supposedly ‘immortal water’ originates. Known by many names, the most popular being the Styx. This site, according to mythology, is where the hero of Troy, Achilleas, was baptized. His mother, Thetis, held him by the heel when submerging him, which is why this was his only weak point on his body, which accounts for why he was killed in the Trojan war. This how the metaphor ‘Achilleas’ heel’ came into to use for describing a secret weak point. We’ll save the rest of this mythological legend as our English-speaking tour guides will be happy to tell you everything about the site whilst on your hike.
Although this hike is not particularly long, the elevation and terrain are best-suited to more experienced hikers. Prepare to get wet too!
