All about the trip
Discover unique volcanic wines and interesting cellars on this full-day tour to Somló and Balaton.
Due to the volcanic soil in these two regions, some of Hungary’s most unique white wines are produced here.
The tour includes a visit to a winery on the northern side of Lake Balaton, affectionately known as the “Hungarian Sea” due to its huge size. The rolling hills above the vast lake are covered with a patchwork of grapevines, fields of lavender, limestone formations, rustic villages and numerous wine cellars.
After our first wine cellar tour, we’ll head to the Somló region, an area where the vineyards cover an extinct volcano. Technically, it’s Hungary’s smallest wine region; an exciting secret garden, full of untouched vineyards and old, crumbling houses. A fortified castle sits perched atop of the hill, along with three medieval churches. Visiting Somló is not much of a touristy experience but it has plenty of rewards and new tastes for real wine lovers.
The main wines produced here are from the native Hungarian varietals of Furmint, Olaszrizling, Hárslevelu, and Juhfark. Interestingly, Juhfark grapes grow almost nowhere else in the world. It is the region’s signature wine and also known as “wedding night wine”.
Once you try a wine from Somló, the local saying goes, “you will forever recognize the taste of them”. The flavours tend to be elegant, high in alcohol, acidic and with lots of minerality. Wines which are meant to be aged. For real connoisseurs, just tasting these unusual wines in such a magical setting will undoubtedly leave you with lasting flavour memories.
In general, the wineries we visit are a mix of the traditional, the experimental, and the modern. We’ll visit the production areas, wander in the vineyards, and tour the ageing cellars. We’ll also meet the winemakers themselves; the very people who are the beating heart of this ancient practice. Your guide will tell you the complete story throughout the day’s tour.
The tour also includes a platter of local cheese or charcuterie along with a wine to sample. We will also enjoy a slow-cooked lunch together, either homemade at a winery or at a winery-owned restaurant; this becomes the perfect opportunity to learn how Hungarian cuisine compliments the locally-crafted wine.
This comprehensive tour is just perfect for wine enthusiasts everywhere to learn about a lesser-known but equally-important region on the world’s stage of wine production.Watch on Youtube
