All about the trip
Go to the discovery of the Baroque's capital and enjoy the delicacies of Sicilian cuisine comfortably seated in an open-air living room! You just need to choose this incredible tour of Noto and Marzamemi. At first, you will visit the village declared Unesco World Heritage of the Humanity, together with the entire Val di Noto, and then you will discover the astonishing beauty of a small fishing village with its small square, just a few steps from the sea.
Noto is full of numerous historic buildings of great artistic importance: palaces, churches, terraces, staircases. All of them were built using the local variety of stone, characterized by a golden hue with pinkish shades. The whole city looks like it is a unique architectural complex. The tour through the Baroque starts from Porta Reale: it is the real city gate erected around 1800 in honor of the visit of Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies. The most impressive and rich churches are Saint Francis of Assisi’s Church, Saint Clare’s Church (it was a Benedictine monastery, today a civic museum) and, obviously, the Duomo Cathedral of Saint Nicolò. The construction of the cathedral began in the late 1600s and contains many works of art, such as the silver urn inside which the relics of the patron Saint of the city lie.
The most important building is that of the town hall: Palazzo Ducezio. It was built during the sixteen century, inspired by ancient French palaces. The ancient residence of the Jesuits of Noto, the church of San Carlo al Corso, is located exactly in front of Via Nicolaci, which takes its name from the family who lived in the palace located on this street. Every Spring, Nicolaci Street hosts the Infiorata Flower Festival, an event internationally awaited; the street is filled with wonderful floral decorations and throughout the city collateral initiatives arise, involving the entire citizenship: the baroque parade, performances by musical groups, art exhibitions, fairs of local products.
A few kilometers away, directly overlooking the sea, Marzamemi awaits you. It is a succession of alleys tinted by the colored windows, an uninterrupted photograph of images to bring in the eyes and in the heart. Arrived at the heart of the village, you will admire the square in front of the palace of the Prince of Villadorata: built-in 1752 in sandstone.
