All about the trip
Eger is Hungary’s northernmost red wine producing region, best known for the Egri Bikavér blend, AKA “Bull’s Blood”.
Winemakers in Eger take this traditional blend very seriously, which has improved tremendously in recent years and has little in common with those past Bikavér blends which were exported to the west during the Communist-era of mass-produced wine.
On this tour you’ll taste various different blends of Bikavér, as well as Eger’s newer white blend, called “Egri Csillag”.
There will also be a chance to sample many of the single varietal wines that make up Bikavér. These Bikavér varieties include, Kékfrankos, Pinot Noir, Portugieser, Merlot, and Kadarka.
Despite being better-known for its red wines, Eger also produces nice whites with high minerality and great flavours. These include local varietals such as, Leányka, Királyleányka, Olaszrizling, and Tramini.
Underneath the town itself, there are sections of an extensive labyrinth of wine cellars that are still being discovered. Some of these cellar networks are hundreds of kilometres in length, and many are currently being restored.
Many of Eger’s best wineries are located in villages just outside of the town, however, the town of Eger itself has played an important role in Hungary’s history. For example, in 1552, Eger’s residents bravely fought the advancing Ottomans and managed to keep them out of the town. According to the legend, this is where the name “Bull’s Blood” first originated. Supposedly, the soldiers were given red wine to help them fight, and the Turks mistook the wine for the blood of bulls.
The wineries we visit are a mix of the traditional, the experimental, and the modern. We’ll visit the production areas, wander in the vineyards, and tour the ageing cellars. We’ll also meet the winemakers themselves; the very people who are the beating heart of this ancient practice. Your guide will tell you the complete story throughout the day’s tour.
The tour also includes a platter of local cheese or charcuterie along with a wine to sample. We will also enjoy a slow-cooked lunch together, either homemade at a winery or at a winery-owned restaurant; this becomes the perfect opportunity to learn how Hungarian cuisine compliments the locally-crafted wine.
This comprehensive tour is just perfect for wine enthusiasts everywhere to learn about a lesser-known but equally-important region on the world’s stage of wine production.Watch on Youtube
