All about the trip
Explore South of Pemba Island by vising Pemba flying fox, spice farms and plantations and Chake Chake city which is located in the middle of Pemba island about 15 minutes’ drive from Pemba Airport and it is situated on a hill with a view on the bay where the tides determine when a dhow can enter the harbour. You will also feel the pulse of Pemba and hear different dialects being spoken by the people at the market. From there you will be proceeding to Old Fort house, English garden to the old slave port and the fish market.
Undeniably one of the top ten beach destinations in Africa
In the morning after breakfast, get picked up from your hotel for the full day trip to South of Pemba for visiting flying fox forest. The Pemba flying fox is very social and has been found in large colonies only recently. The Pemba flying fox is found only on Pemba Island, Tanzania. The island was originally forested, but only remnants of the primary forest remain. Estimates of the status of the Pemba flying fox have varied considerably recently. Most flying foxes eat fruit and are also called fruit bats. Fruit bats are ecologically and economically important because they pollinate and disperse the seeds of wild and commercial plants. Pemba Island is home to 4 species of Old World fruit bats (Megachiroptera).
On the way to Chake Chake City, we will visit spice farms and plantations, Friendly, knowledgeable, and informative tour guides will escort you on a walking tour in the spice farms, picking bunches of leaves, fruit, and twigs from bushes and trees, inviting you to smell or taste them to guess what they are. This is a half-day tour through Wete old road to Mtambwe village where you can see a variety of spices before visiting the oil distillery factory located 4 kilometers from Chake Chake Town Centre at Wawi village.
We will end our day by visiting Chake Chake City, set on a ridge overlooking mangrove-filled Chake Chake Bay, is Pemba’s main town and the best base for visiting the island’s southern half. There’s no equivalent of Stone Town here, but it’s an appealingly scruffy city whose compact core is packed tight with small shops and makes for an interesting walk. We will take you to most historical sites in Pemba. You will visit Chake town market (opened 1904). Here you will be able to see and buy tropical fruits and spices (if you wish).
