All about the trip
The USAT Liberty shipwreck is a diving experience suitable for all levels of ability. It is a perfect location for both beginners and experienced divers to enjoy. The shipwreck itself lies between 3 - 35 meters deep and is accessible from the shore via a descent along the sandy bottom.
Inside the ship there are a few corridors that are accessible for more-experienced divers to navigate through. For divers with less experience, the cargo hold is an equally interesting part of the ship to explore.
The USAT Liberty was a U.S. Navy cargo ship that was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in 1942 during World War II. The boat did not sink immediately, it was towed by a Dutch tugboat from the island of Lombok to Tulamben, where it was then beached to salvage what was left of the cargo. The ship remained stuck there until 1963 when the volcano “Gunung Agung” erupted. The resulting tremors and lava flow then pushed the ship into the sea where it has remained to this day.
The biodiversity of the site itself is just incredible. The ship itself is covered in brilliant coral and multi-colored sponges. There are big schools of jackfish, giant wrasse, bumphead parrotfish, moray eels, turtles, barracuda and the occasional black tip reef shark. There have also been frequent sightings of pygmy seahorse, leaf fish, ghost pipefish and frogfish. There really is a lot of marine life to see at the Liberty shipwreck.
The currents at the Liberty shipwreck dive site are generally mild, however, it can be a little more difficult in August because the waves are usually larger at this time of year. As with all our sea dives, you will need diving experience in order to participate on this activity.
